  Spellbind

The first version of this game, Spellbind, was created in 2004. My goal was to make a simple strategy game that my kids could play in the back seat of the car when we were traveling. I was inspired by the old "Travel Bingo" games that I used to play when I was a kid (with translucent red plastic windows that would slide down to mark that you were first to spot a cow, a stop sign, or a train).

The game design itself was finalized in only a few days. But, it took over a month to do the paper engineering and construction. All the pieces had to be cut out by hand with an Xacto knife. The interior of the card contains hidden layers of guides and wheel axles. It's quite intricate and required a lot of patience and precision to glue it all together. I never thought it could be mass-produced. xray view

Luckily, in 2017 I had the opportunity to meet with the excellent team at Chronicle Books in San Francisco. Chronicle has a fantastic catalogue of books and games and I knew right away that it would be a perfect match. They did all the hard work of figuring out how to manufacture the game cards, as well as finding the awesome Hayden Aube to create the distinctive art for both the cards and the packaging. hayden aube

It's been 15 years in the making, and now I'm humbled to see this unique game come to market! I hope your kids enjoy playing it as much as mine did!
